Sopwith Camel Model Plane
The Sopwith Camel is credited by many military experts and war historians as being the most famous British fighting aircraft of World War I.
A notoriously difficult plane to fly - but outstanding in its maneuverability, it was named after its manufacturer, Sir Thomas O.M. Sopwith. The Sopwith Camel is also given its distinctive name because of the hump over its gun installation.
In terms of aircraft destroyed, the Sopwith Camel was the best fighter plane of WWI. 1,294 enemy aircraft were shot down by Sopwith Camel planes during World War 1. By the final years of WWI, Britain's Royal Flying Corps included 5,500 single-seat Sopwith Camel fighter planes. Sopwith Camel pilots were known as ''knights of the air.''
The plane was a fast and deadly weapon in the hands of an ace pilot and many believe that a Sopwith Camel shot down German ace Baron von Richthofen, aka the "Red Baron," although some experts now state that the plane belonging to Germany's most feared pilot was actually shot down by an Australian machine gunner on the ground.
Lovers of the Peanuts cartoons and comics will also be amused to know that its beloved character Snoopy also flies around in a Sopwith Camel. The plane certainly evokes a nostalgic sense of rugged individualism, romance and adventure.
